CME INFORMATION
Statement of Need
Pneumonia, a vaccine-preventable disease, remains a substantial cause of morbidity
and mortality, yet approximately one-third of adults aged 65 years and older have
not received the pneumococcal vaccine. This initiative aims to provide healthcare
professionals with education and tools to increase awareness and rates of pneumococcal
vaccination in residents of senior housing settings.
Target Audience
This activity is designed for physicians, nurses, pharmacists, case managers, and
other administrative personnel employed in senior housing and care settings in Indiana.
Participation is open to healthcare professionals in Indiana who interact with patients
in senior housing and care settings.
Activity Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
• Discuss the morbidity and mortality of invasive pneumococcal disease in elderly populations
• Outline pneumococcal and influenza vaccine recommendations and schedules for residents and
healthcare providers in senior housing settings
• Identify organizational changes and tools to overcome barriers to immunization against pneumococcal disease in senior
housing settings
• Introduce nationally recognized quality measures to improve pneumococcal
vaccination rates in residents of senior housing settings, including continuing
care retirement communities, low income senior housing, and assisted living facilities
Support
This activity is supported through an educational grant from Pfizer, Inc.
Sponsors
This activity is sponsored by LeadingAge Indiana, Indiana University and The Academy for Continued Healthcare Learning.
